Benji “Chief” Appiah is a South London-born drummer and percussionist whose dynamic, genre-spanning approach has made him one of the most exciting rhythmic voices in UK jazz. Growing up immersed in a wide range of musical styles, Benji developed a distinctive sound rooted in curiosity, versatility and a deep understanding of rhythm across cultures.
A driving force within the contemporary UK jazz scene, he has performed and collaborated with leading artists including Nubya Garcia, Kokoroko, Oscar Jerome, Joe Armon-Jones, Neue Grafik and Alewya. He is also a key member of the influential collectives Steam Down and Orii, both renowned for pushing the boundaries of jazz, soul and electronic music.
